Chapter Five

All around them, the woods were eerily quiet. A gentle wind nudged its way through the red cedar trees, caressing wisps of Mori’s hair. He was beginning to understand why Kurama loved his home, but he also knew violence could easily slip through the peaceful cracks of the world without notice.

His eyes moved to the girl he and Kurama found. Mori knew nothing else could be done for the young girl’s battered and unconscious body. She had been left for dead, probably by the same bandits Kurama mentioned were lurking in the woods.

Fury shimmered around the air where the fox sat over the girl. Mori could understand his anger. He felt the same whenever he saw women or children being caught up in the nasty jaws of war. This was much worse.

These bandits obviously hurt the girl because they knew they could get away with it. Mori had a feeling they were about to be rightfully dealt a worse, but deserving fate if not from Kurama then they’d had to contend with him.

“Kurama,” Mori interrupted, breaking the silence. “The bandits might still be around.”

His eyes nervously scanned the trees, but Kurama only lifted a hand without looking at him. “They aren’t our concern at the moment.”

Taking the fox’s word as truth, Mori slowly made his way to Kurama and the girl, his eyes not leaving the trees. Kurama place a slender hand above the girl’s chest. For a moment, nothing happened.

Her breathing remained shallow and her body was still. Unseen energy, like a gentle breeze, transferred from Kurama’s palm to the injured girl. Gasping suddenly, the girl’s body shuddered back to life. Bright ebony eyes flickered open, and they stared at Kurama in wonderment.

“You’re fine now, child,” Kurama said gently. “What’s your name? Can you tell us what happened to you?”

“My name is Eri,” she rasped, wincing as Mori helped her sit up.

She murmured thanks for the jug of water he gently pressed to her lips. Grief then clouded her eyes, as if she finally remembered what had befallen her. “Bandits. They killed my parents and my uncles.”

Eri’s tiny frame began to shake. Latching and clinging to Mori, she broke into heart wrenching sobs. The girl must’ve been around twelve or thirteen in Mori’s estimation, but she looked much younger, and so small and fragile in his arms.

“You’re safe now,” Kurama murmured, reaching out to stroke her hair.

“What’s going to happen to her?” Mori asked, concerned.

He looked at Kurama and approved of the grim resolution in the fox’s eyes. Anger, cold and unyielding, just lay underneath. Anger, Mori was familiar with.

“We’ll take her with us. I’ve healed her body, but her mind would take more time to recover,” Kurama decided.

The walk back to the house by the river was a silent one. Neither of them spoke. Mori easily carried Eri piggyback on his back. Feeling her small fingers painfully digging into his shoulders, sudden bloodlust coursed through him.

“Calm yourself, Mori. We’ll deal with this in an appropriate matter,” Kurama commented.
